Did you know?

When pioneers first reached the midwest and saw 

the great natural vastness of tall grasses— quite a contrast to the gloomy forests where they had always lived–– they didn’t know what to call them, and borrowed the term 

already in use among the French inhabitants. Prairie means ‘meadow’ in French.


Did you know?

Seward proposed that Lincoln proclaim a day of national thanksgiving, and drafted a proclamation to that effect. There might be no national Thanksgiving Day today without William Henry Seward.
