Flora Folly

William Seward urged the construction of the transcontinental railroads, considered folly because this was just at the start of the Civil War, and vital resources were needed elsewhere to support the war effort. Though Lincoln gets the credit, Seward was instrumental in opening up the west.

The Rainwater Basin stretches from Seward County west to Gosper County, spanning 21 counties and nearly 6,200 square miles. Rainwater and snowmelt fill the basins every year, just in time for migration of the Snow Geese, and other waterfowl that depend on the rainwater basin for food, roosting and shelter.


Did you know?

Omaha was the original capital of Nebraska. The capital was moved to Lincoln because most of the citizens of Nebraska lived south of the Platte, a river that was dangerous to cross in the mid-1800s.
